Calgarian's MS documentary Living Proof to screen in theatres across Canada, the U.S. (Postmedia)

There is a scene in Matt Embry’s documentary Living Proof where the filmmaker lists some of the side effects that have been associated with drugs taken by multiple sclerosis patients.
Among many others, they include back pain, blood in the urine, burning or stinging of the skin, irritation of the mouth or tongue and “painful cold sores or blisters on the lips, nose, eyes or genitals.”
Embry, who is filmed shooting this segment for his website, seems to grow increasingly angry as he reads the list.
“Let’s just stop it,” he finally says. “It’s too depressing, man.”
The Calgarian is a veteran director of documentaries, having made films about Ian Tyson, the Calgary flood and Theo Fleury, among others. But with Living Proof, which will screen across Canada from Feb. 3 to 5 at Landmark Cinemas, there was no distance between story and storyteller. It was, he says, the hardest documentary he has ever made.
